Just what are these advances in skating technology that have the roller skating world on edge?
It goes like this; Neodymium RING MAGNETS OF material that was discovered in the 1960s to have an extraordinary capacity to become magnetized. Everyone knows that magnets have both a north and a south pole. Opposite poles attract and like poles repel each other. It is the property of expulsion that enables the fantastic new skates to perform fast, better and easier that any skate before. It is also this component that has the IOC (International Olympic Committee) somewhat concerned.

Ron Neighbors, a Vice President under the Rules and Laws Committee stated that the neodymium skates need to be peer reviewed and evaluated to see if they are aligned with the competitive spirit of the sport. Neighbors also stated that he doubted that the evaluation would be completed by the time the trials were scheduled but perhaps by the Olympics in Tokyo, Japan in 2020.
Enthusiasm for the sport has been less than in past Olympics because the times are becoming stagnate with few superheros. Traditional skates will only go so fast, he said.
So this may be just the shot in the arm that the skating community, both participants & enthusiastic observers may need to keep skating on the front burner.
How these skates actually work is still a bit of a mystery. We understand the skates with magnetic balls bearing are repelling against each other but scientists still are unsure why they work that way especially in the skates.
These skates may lead to leap in technology that will enhance gas or alternative energy automobiles beyond anything that could have been dreamed of just a few years ago.
There are definite possibilities in the alternative energy field as well. Wind driven energy generation floating on a cushion of not only zero resistance but an assisted or amplified resistance that push the blades even when there is little or no wind to drive them.
